Switzerland fact or fiction?

Planning a trip to Switzerland? Would you recognize a Switzerland fact if you came across one?  How well do you know your host country? Read the following questions and decide for yourself; is it Switzerland fact or fiction?

*** Switzerland fact or fiction?  People in Switzerland have their own language, Swedish.     Fiction. Actually you’ll find that people in Switzerland speak one of four languages: German, French, Italian, Romansch. Romansch is only found in Switzerland but it isn’t that widespread.

About 50,000 of the 7,261,200 inhabitants speak Romansch. That’s less than 1 percent of the population! About 65% of the population speak German, almost 19% speak French and another 10% speak Italian. The remaining 6% speak a foreign language.

*** Switzerland fact or fiction?  Every man between the age of 20 and 30 owns a firearm that they keep in their house.     Switzerland Fact. The Swiss are very proud of is their military. Every able-bodied male between 20 and 37 years old is part of the Swiss military. The Swiss have a very liberal gun policy that is in keeping with their beliefs as a nation to the right to bear arms and that has military forces ready at all times will protect them from invasion.

*** Switzerland fact or fiction? Swiss Bank Accounts are Hollywood Fiction.

Fiction. What I mean here is that the idea that the Swiss Bank Account is Hollywood fiction is fiction. Is that a double negative? All you have to understand is that I’m saying sneaky private banks (15 of them) do exist and they will keep your money for you ("Mums the word"). But before you start hiding your shady funds to a Swiss Bank Account consider that just because they believe firmly in protecting your identity does not mean they will be your partner in crime.

*** Switzerland fact or fiction? Swiss Army Watches are really made in China.

Fiction. Swiss Army watches are made in Switzerland. Karl Elsener founded the company in 1884. His company made their first delivery of soldiers’ knives to the Swiss Army in 1891. Until 1949, they only sold to military groups. They now export 90% of their products to over 100 different countries.

*** Switzerland fact or fiction? Every man between the ages of 20 and 47 can be drafted.

Switzerland Fact. All Swiss males are conscripted (drafted) into the military where they serve a term of 300 active days of duty (about 1 ½ years total). Military reform in 2003 has reduced the time spent to about 260 total active days. Out of Switzerland’s total population (7,261,000) about 1,855,808 are males that could be drafted. But only 1,579,921 are considered to be fit for duty (about 22% of the entire population).

I hope you enjoyed my game of Switzerland fact or fiction. Hopefully it helped you to become better acquainted with my country and I hope to see you here soon.
